WHAT DOES BLEPHAROPLASTY INVOLVE?
An upper blepharoplasty lasts about one hour. The surgery onA the lower lid may take up a little more time, precisely two hours. That is why the eye lid surgery is rightly considered a “day surgery”.
A blepharoplasty can be done under local anesthetic with sedation or under general anesthetic.
Surgery on the upper eyelids generally involves making a cut (incision) along the eyelid crease in the natural skin fold of the eyelid, either just below the lower lashes or on the inside of the eyelid. After carefully separating the skin from the underlying structures and removing excess fat tissue or muscle, the incision is carefully closed up.
The fat is mainly removed from the bags under the eyes. Sometimes and if necessary, a small amount of skin and supporting muscles and tendon are also pulled out.
The surgeon will normally apply thin, sticky strips called suture strips to support the eyelids after surgery. These are usually removed up to a week later.
EYELID SURGERY: RECOVERY PERIOD
The recovery period depends on every individual case. The average time needed to recover from the eyelid surgery is about a week. However, bruises, scars and redness may take up to two weeks to fade.
Some general advice by our experts is:
- Prop your head up with pillows for a couple of days when resting to reduce the swelling.
- Gently clean your eyelids using prescribed ointment or eyedrops.
- Hold a cold pack to your eye for a few days.
- Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and wind.
- Avoid any strenuous activity and swimming for a few days.
- Quit smoking, contact lenses and rubbing the eyes for a few days.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
It is common after eyelid surgery to temporarily have numb eyelids that are difficult to close at night, irritated, sensitive or watery eyes. The discomfort may last for a few weeks. Bruising and swelling that looks like having a black eye may be another side effect. Please remember that all side effects are temporary and will gradually disappear after the procedure.
