Understanding Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction, also known  as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to create a breast size more proportionate to the body, helping to alleviate discomfort associated with overly large breasts. This surgery is not just about aesthetics but often provides significant relief for women experiencing physical pain and emotional distress due to their breast size. By reducing the size of the breasts, the procedure aims to alleviate issues such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation
beneath the breast crease, and difficulty fitting into bras and clothing.

Additionally, itaddresses the emotional and psychological distress that can accompany having large breasts,
such as unwanted attention and self-consciousness.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The surgery typically involves the following steps:
Mapping: First the surgeon will map out the area and mark where each incision will
be. This helps to ensure that symmetry is achieved between the breasts and the nipples are aligned.
Anaesthesia: The patient is given a general anaesthesia during the procedure.
Incision: The surgeon makes an incision around the areola, extending down to thebreast crease and along the breast crease itself, creating an anchor shape.
Tissue Removal and Reshaping: Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, more youthful height.
Closing the Incisions: The incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. There will be sutures that hold the breast in its new shape and surface sutures to close the incision lines too.

Who Would Benefit from this Procedure?
